Wednesday 30 December 2015

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

I always thought it ended on the big revelation; but it still continues on.
One thumbs up - it was much better than episode IV for more interesting storylines, Yoda being hilarious, and a far superior lightsabre battle.

Thursday 24 December 2015

Frozen

Mum: "Why is it called Frozen? Is it because it's on an ice island?"
Me: "Errrrrrrrr...." *dumbfounded look*
One thumbs up, but half a thumbs down for gingerbread men icing gone wrong.

Tuesday 22 December 2015

Elf

Zooey and Will Ferrel's little duet of Baby It's Cold Outside was really quite lovely :)
One thumbs up for some Christmas cheer; one personal thumbs up for me for a successful spicy tuna rice crispy but half a thumbs down for jam that may be off.

Monday 21 December 2015

Love Actually

With the Kathryn, Sally and Clint on the couch, and Yvonne, Jing and Helen on whatsapp.
Two thumbs up, but sad the writers decided that Alan Rickman's not shown backstory involved an actual affair.

Saturday 19 December 2015

Midnight in Paris

Is it a bit worrying that I see some of Rachel McAdam's character traits within myself (not all, just some).
Two thumbs up, and oh the opening montage and music is always just so beautiful.

Friday 11 December 2015

Star Wars: IV, A New Hope

Oh. This was supposed to be the best one?
Half a thumbs up, but I really enjoyed the trivia about the actor in R2D2 who was often left behind in his costume whilst the other crew and actors went to lunch!
Correction: This is NOT best one. It's just Josh's favourite. The next one is generally regarded as the best one.

Tuesday 8 December 2015

A League of Their Own

"There's no crying in baseball!"
One and a half thumbs up, and gleeful delight when I learnt Josh likes this movie too!

Tuesday 1 December 2015

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

That dragged on and on! And again, half of it was just going around making propaganda videos!
One and a half thumbs down - but two personal thumbs up to Josh who had to endure this, just to cheer me up from being an irrational sobbing mess because I couldn't go to the beach this afternoon on my day off on a gorgeous day (could this BE more of a first world problem?!)

Monday 30 November 2015

Singing in the Rain

"No no no! Yes yes yes!" I will always chuckle at this scene!
Just shy of two thumbs up - mostly because I don't care for the jazz broadway number.

Sunday 29 November 2015

Clueless

"You are a virgin who can't drive" - that really would kill me as a 16 year old... or 20-something year old.
One thumbs up, but in real life I would probably give Cher one thumbs down for being a ditzy attention whore.

Tuesday 24 November 2015

The Terminal

Don't trust the government's advice when it comes to Homeland Security.
Half a thumbs up - it was entertaining enough, and more so than I would have thought for a movie set entirely in an airport terminal.

Tuesday 17 November 2015

Moulin Rouge

Did men find Nicole Kidman sexy? Also, where is Nicole Kidman these days?
One and a half thumbs up - and I'm ashamed to say, but I may need to rethink "Moulin Rouge" as my favourite movie...

Julie and Julia

I was always fixated on how annoying Julia is (particularly her voice), that I only just realised how annoying Julie would be as a friend if she is constantly spewing overly-admiring Julia Child facts.
Considering how much I am irritated by the two main characters, I still like this movie - one thumbs up!

Frozen

Olaf is not great or funny at all.
Half a thumbs up - I definately was not as bothered by the amount of signing as other people, perhaps because Elsa and Anna were so pretty!

Monday 16 November 2015

Love Actually

Yvonne really likes the scene when he walks off after having the video discovered.
Two thumbs up, and bonus points for take away yum cha Love Actually morning.

Cannot believe I cried... twice.
One thumbs up, and the Chang Mai lanterns are still on the bucket list.

You know what is more annoying that an album full of mashups? Hailee Steinfeld's character.
One thumbs down, but one thumbs up if Snoop Dogg ever actually does release a Christmas album!

Vacation

Did you know that Seal beat lupus?
One and a half thumbs down - that was pretty shit.

Saturday 7 November 2015

Skyfall

Upon learning that Daniel actively wants shoes that go click clack...
"You can never be James --"
"WELL I WOULDN'T BRING THEM ON THE MISSION"
Three quarters thumbs up - it's just not as exciting or sexy as Casino Royale.

Tuesday 3 November 2015

Bridge of Spies

That was some of the best popcorn I have ever had.
Half a thumbs up, and am now reading up on the Berlin Wall, because like Jon Snow, "I know nothing"

Tuesday 27 October 2015

Juvenile Lifers

I'm scared straight now by that prison guard.
One thumbs up because it was riveting how the system could fuck up his treatment, and bums-on-sofa points for only Kathryn being home which meant we could watch this on the couch!

Sunday 25 October 2015

The Dark Knight

It's a long movie and I still didn't finish transferring my ortho K notes.
One and a half thumbs up, and I just realised Rachel's letter is particularly brutal if you were Bruce.

Friday 16 October 2015

The Devil Wears Prada

Say what you will about Anne Hathaway, but when she is the glamazon she is pretty smoking!
One and three quarters thumbs up.

India's Daughter

I am so disgusted at the rapists, I am so disgusted at the backwards mentality towards women.
One thumbs up, and remember Jyoti Singh.

Tuesday 6 October 2015

The Martian

One and a quarter thumbs up, but itchy boobs because I dropped some popcorn (and then still ate it two and a half hours later).

Monday 5 October 2015

Mona Lisa Smile

It's like a female, but inferior version of Dead Poet's Society.
Three quarters thumbs up because I still love inspiring teacher stories, and it is so pretty!

Dogma

I was actually interested in a Kevin Smith film... for the first half; then the second half got soured by the yet another lecture/ramblings from my parents.

I think this General Tso's chicken is just American - I've never heard of it!
One thumbs up, and laughing out loud at the above 'what the hell' moment with the fortune cookie.

Sunday 20 September 2015

Charlie's Angels

Until I saw Back to the Future, I thought Crispin Glover only exclusively played the 'creepy thin man.'
One thumbs up because mindless entertainment, but one personal thumbs down because I should not have snacked like that.

Sunday 13 September 2015

Swingers

How does he just know how to Latin dance like that?

One and a half thumbs up, but one thumbs down for Josh's feeling sick freak out later.

Sunday 6 September 2015

Transformers

"Are you the tooth fairy?" Clearly not, you stupid girl.
One thumbs down, as it just went downhill from the beginning "At first there was a cube..."

Straight Outta Compton

Even though set in the 90s, it really opened my eyes to the current American climate of police brutality against blacks.
One and a half thumbs up for the film, but two personal thumbs down to that Suge man who is a horrible violent douchebag.

Thursday 3 September 2015

Inception

When you are at a loss for words - lump of people; man vs. car *motion*
Two thumbs up, and extra points for one of my favourite behind the scenes movie magic (Joseph Gordon Levitt floating scene).

Tuesday 1 September 2015

So desperately needed a distraction from that horrible sit down lecture.

Monday 17 August 2015

Shakespeare in Love

I wonder how they learnt these dances - at school? But did they even have schools back in those times?

Notting Hill

I like how happy and peaceful she is during the few days she hides out at Hugh Grant's place.

Best beauty pageant mockumentary!
One and a half thumbs up!

Tuesday 11 August 2015

It was so hard not to cry during the "When she loved me" scene.
One and a half thumbs up!

Tuesday 4 August 2015

Little Miss Sunshine

Two thumbs up, but points off to the microwave popcorn that was lacking butter.

50 First Dates

Need to find some Beach Boys tunes.
One thumbs up, that was actually a very sweet movie.

Spirited Away

Sprited Away is a little bit scary, but I am being a brave girl.
Zero thumbs up - it is very pretty, but a bit too fantastical for me; or perhaps I am not used to a Japanese storyline.

Sunday 2 August 2015

You've Got Mail

They've met, but they don't know they have met! Oh the brilliance!
Two thumbs up.

Thursday 23 July 2015

Ted 2

Amanda Seyfried is such an unprofessional lawyer and way too young for Mark Walhberg (he looks like her uncle for god sake!)
One thumbs down - too long, too many 'waste of time' numbers.

Tuesday 21 July 2015

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Russell Brand really doesn't do it for me; though he is on point in this film.
One and a half thumbs up!

Half a thumbs up simply because of "I'm a little bumblebee!", and apologies to Josh for falling asleep during it.

Tuesday 7 July 2015

Dr. Eugene is such a villain - terrifyingly controlling and manipulative; and the scariest part is that he is real.
One thumbs up for the film, two thumbs down for the worst title, and personal thumbs up to Nicole for perks and being the best!

Moulin Rouge

I knew a number of girls, myself included to an extent, who wanted to be Satine when we were in highschool; it is a little bit messed up when I think about it now.

Tuesday 30 June 2015

Inglorious Basterds

That opening scene is possibly one of the best ever.
Two thumbs up.

The dodgem cars scene is where I fell in love with The Cure "Just Like Heaven"
One and half thumbs up - and to all you Kristen Stewart haters out there, you just have not yet seen her in this.

Monday 29 June 2015

Kill Bill vol. 2

Watching Kill Bill because stupid Channel Seven are showing stupid Lleyton Hewitt over Novak Djokovic. Are they JOKING?! Because they are clearly not Djoking!
One and a half thumbs up.

Inside Out

"Oh I'm just going to lie down here, and my legs don't work, and I'm going to touch everything"- Joy impersonating Sadness.
Three quarters thumbs up, but thumbs down for the massive gum or lolly that got stuck under my shoe - my disgust person was on overdrive!

Saturday 13 June 2015

My Super EX Girlfriend

That was a bit weird/inappropriate? - her being so strong that her riding-on-top moves the bed and through the wall.
One thumbs down, and the horror of what sky sharks would be like.

Wednesday 10 June 2015

The Queen of Versailles

I was surprised at how ordinary a lot of aspects of their life was - but I truly think she is quite well-meaning.
One thumbs up, and three copies of Operation they clearly had to have for Christmas.

Monsters Inc.

Schnitzel pulled my foot when I was on the kitchen counter.

One 'kefelter fishy' thumbs up (it's actually gefilte!)

Tuesday 19 May 2015

Mad Max: Fury Road

I thought Tom Hardy was going to be the hottest thing in this movie... but damn I would let that girl have my baby!
Half a thumbs up - more like Mad Charlize amiright?!

Monday 18 May 2015

Easy A

On the subject of actually having sex vs. people thinking you did, it reminded me of possibly the worst 'would you rather question' posed to me - would you rather fuck a goat and no one would know, or not fuck a goat and have everyone think you did.
One thumbs up, and Emma Stone is just so cool.

Mean Girls

I did a google image search for Kevin Gnapoor's badass card, and I found this.
Two thumbs up!

Bridget Jones' Diary

How is it possible to stumble in home that loudly?

One thumbs up, and a guilty pepperoni pizza.

Friday 24 April 2015

Billy Madison

Clearly, Billy Madison over Happy Gilmore (he agrees!)
One and three quarters thumbs up, but it was a shame we missed the end speech.

Thursday 23 April 2015

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Fell asleep at parts (what is wrong with me?!) - so I don't exactly know who or what is Ultron? And who is this red guy?
Half a drowsy thumbs up, and a startled hand slap to Josh, who did not appreciate that!

Monday 20 April 2015

Mommy

That kid did a too brilliant of a job being the douchey little shithead.
Zero thumbs up - it was okay, a bit weird, and there is a reason the 1:1 aspect ratio (a viewing area of a perfect square) is unheard of - it was uncomfortable and distracting.

Tuesday 14 April 2015

Dior and I

The love between atelier Florence and Pieter (Raf Simmon's right hand man) was just so sweet!
One thumbs up, and 'tomorrow will be a magnificant day!'

Sunday 12 April 2015

That second half with the lady giant storyline was way too long and unncessary.
Zero thumbs up, but Emily Blunt is still awesome.

Maid in Manhattan

"Isn't Ralph Fiennes a serious actor?" - Suezane
One thumbs up - yes he is Sue, but isn't this just the perfect background movie?!

Bewitched

Nicole Kidman had a bad character and acted terribly.
One and a half thumbs down - it is exactly as bad as all the reviews make it out to be.

The Ugly Truth

Trying to work out Maui car rental in the middle.
One thumbs up - I know it's a crap movie, but it's a fun crap movie.

Wild

That opening toenail scene is one of the most horrific things I have ever seen - I felt a bit nauseous that I had to pause it, watch something light-hearted, then come back.
One and a half thumbs up!

Laggies

A moment of lusty Sam Rockwell! lol DILF
Three quarters thumbs up - the story is very silly, but it was entertaining.

Selma

I have to agree with the Academy in it not receiving best actor or actress nominations - the story itself was powerful but the performances were only average.
Half a thumbs up.

Friday 27 March 2015

That Sugar Film

I thought I lost you at the 'naturopath', and then you bring on 'wellness leader.' *massive eyeroll*
Half a thumbs up, but you should take home this message: "It's not so much the calories that count, but where they are coming from"

Blades of Glory

The YSL bag costs 2600 AUD...
Half a thumbs up.

Saturday 21 March 2015

One thumbs up for the movie, one thumbs down for the rain, and one thumbs up for each of the delicious baos: peking duck, fried chicken and pork belly!

Tuesday 17 March 2015

Chappie

Mostly I was impressed with how sympathetic they made the robot Chappie, until things got a bit silly with the whole consciousness and battery thing at the end.
Zero thumbs up (but no thumbs down), and at least now I know who Die Antwoord are.

Lars and the Real Girl

It's a bit insane how everyone in the town goes along with it. Also, Mark Brendanawicz!
Zero thumbs up - meh.

Friday 13 March 2015

Whiplash

Josh actually went out with a girl who commited the crime of mixing maltesers into the popcorn.
One shiny floating J.K. Simmons head!

Tuesday 10 March 2015

Napoleon Dynamite

I would like to make it a goal to learn the dance by the end of the year, but I don't think that will happen.
One and a half thumbs up, and points for Ka'anapali, rather than Wailea.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

The film colour palette is much darker and washed out than the advertisements or book suggest.
Only one thumbs up, and beautiful articulate voice points to Ralph Fiennes, darling.

Saturday 7 March 2015

Citizen Four

That woman sitting next to me was very standoff-ish when I politely asked if anyone was sitting in the seat next to hers; she also shook or nodded her head a lot during this.
Three quarters thumbs up - it was very insightful into the Snowden events.

Monday 2 March 2015

The One Hundred Foot Journey

I"m just always so happy when different cultures get along (but non-cheesy).
One thumbs up, and pretty points for Marguerite's style and the mise en scene.

Tuesday 24 February 2015

Kingsman: The Secret Service

When I think of Colin Firth fighting, I think of Bridget Jones' Diary; I never expected to see him weld an axe to a woman's face.
Half a thumbs up - I was quite taken aback by how different it was from what the trailers showed, but I am not entirely sure if I liked it or not.

Sunday 22 February 2015

Speaking of heist movies at the Erko.

One and a half thumbs up, and FINALLY I have seen this classic.

Wednesday 18 February 2015

The Matrix

We decided Keanu Reeves looks like a eurasian Jon Hamm; who Andrea saw alongside Jonah Hill in New York!
One and a half thumbs up.

Tuesday 17 February 2015

Fifty shades of grey

All the reviews criticise Anastacia for being spineless; but she is much less of a twit than HE is a possessive, overly-controlling, very disturbed person.
Half a thumbs up.

Tuesday 10 February 2015

The Royal Tenenbaums

IMBD trivia: The original Mordecai was kidnapped and held for a ransom, but they couldn't wait for him to be returned, so they had to use a different bird - hence the 'more white feathers'!
Just shy of two thumbs up, and that was a good movie (and cross-stitch) escape - I felt completely removed from what I was doing before this, and I almost forgot what my evening plans were going to be.

Saturday 7 February 2015

The Theory of Everything

That croquet scene was my tearjerker scene.
One and a half thumbs up, and my personal nomination for Felicity Jones - she was phenomenal.

One thumbs up, and I am glad to have watched this classic (for the first time, I know!)

Thursday 29 January 2015

Birdman

The drum score was amazing - was almost a story in itself!
One thumbs up; it was good, but I feel the hype exceeded it.

Saturday 24 January 2015

American Sniper

I did not know this was a Clint Eastwood film; and I did not register that was Sienna Miller either!
One and a quarter thumbs up; it is quite intense.

Friday 16 January 2015

Taken 2

It will be forever known as the time I actually said aloud that age (ahem Josh absolutely insisted).
One thumbs up - half a thumbs was deducted because the final 10 minutes felt anti-climatic (broken viewing was probably to blame).

Wednesday 14 January 2015

The Darjeeling Limited

Doing my llama cross stitch and watching the Darjeeling Limited... could I BE having any more fun??
Two thumbs up, and confirmed top 15 movie (still unsure if it gets a place in the top 10).

Tuesday 13 January 2015

Moonrise Kingdom

I want my life to look as pretty and charming as a Wes Anderson film, and to have to sass of this guy.
One and a half thumbs up - the half a thumbs was reluctantly deducted because I felt annoyed rather than charmed by Sam's attitude.

Monday 12 January 2015

Slumdog Millionaire

I always think the correct answer is Ricky Ponting... but it's not.
One and a bit more thumbs up, and also did you know Usain Bolt's sporting idol is Ricky Ponting?

Mean Girls

Finished this whilst starting my llama cross-stitch!
Two thumbs up!

Wasabi is Lote Tuquiri!!
6.5 to 7 out of ten, and an extra thumbs up for this bit of trivia - Beymax's movements was modelled after studying baby penguins.

Tuesday 6 January 2015

The Imitation Game

Did you know that in the lead up to the US release of the film, The New York Times reprinted the same crossword puzzle that was put in the advertisement? I would love to find a copy somewhere (and promptly fail it!)
One thumbs up - it was good, but not great.

The Longest Week

"How am I supposed to care about a group of over-privileged, affluent types who go gallivanting around without any sort of a moral compass?"
One thumbs down - Anna sold it to me as a French film set in New York; and though it was pretty as such, it just had no substance and completely unlikeable characters.

Friday 2 January 2015

The Interview

Oh no, my hottie James Franco is starting to look old!
One and a half thumbs up, but damnit I fell asleep twice again (I blame the sickness).
