Monday 31 December 2018

Dead Poets Society

I loved Neil then, and I still love him now.
One and three quarters thumbs up - they got the casting right, I could not imagine River Phoenix as Neil, or Liam Neeson as Mr. Keating (though that one is not too far fetched).

Saturday 29 December 2018

Avengers 2: The Age of Ultron

I fell asleep in the third act
Me: "So how did they kill Ultron?"
Josh: "Don't worry, they just did. They all did"
Zero thumbs up - I thought I have seen this before, but no, it was probably just Josh telling me the story to prepare for the next one.

Mulan

Okay why am I crying when she is running away in disguise?
One thumbs up - Mulan, you go girl!

Wednesday 26 December 2018

The Holiday

Running in heels in the snow is just stupid, though I do like that she stopped to catch her breath.
Half a thumbs up - it's alright I guess.

Monday 24 December 2018

Love Actually

When I was younger I would have been flattered by a video of just me; but now that is just freaky.
One and a half thumbs up - it seems like everyone is maturing into high-brow Love Actually hating people, and I will be left behind still liking it.

Wednesday 12 December 2018

Green Book

I exalted a lone laugh out loud when he was writing 'As I am writing this letter, I am eating potato chips'
One and a half thumbs up - it was much better than the trailer made it out to be, and personal thumbs up to Nicole for directing us to these free tickets!

Tuesday 11 December 2018

The Princess Switch

Of all the ridiculous things in this movie (not one but two made up European countries, no kissing before marriage, a royal in a mini-skirt in public) nothing beats the suspension of reality to make me believe his favourite Christmas movie is Netflix's A Christmas Prince
One thumbs down - it is so bad but you will keep watching till the end to confirm it will go exactly the way you think it will.

Monday 10 December 2018

The Disaster Artist

I am pretty sure James Franco is wearing a prosthetic nose.
One and a half thumbs up.

Saturday 8 December 2018

Dumplin'

My favourite Dolly song is probably Islands in the Stream (out of the three I know).
One thumbs up - aww that was really sweet, and this superior in every way to "Sierra Burgess..." about bigger girls, friendship and romance.

Thursday 6 December 2018

Ted

Jenny took the most adorable picture of Baby Jack and Ted... and I totally forgot she had Ted in the first place because Marky Mark's name was John Bennett!
One thumbs up, and it is Snitzel's birthday tomorrow! He will be 10!

Friday 30 November 2018

The Departed

Final duck count was probably zero, but I cannot say that with any certainty.
One and a half thumbs up - but boy was I stressed out for Leo the whole time.

The Intern

About halfway through I realised everyone has been decent and there was no bad guy... yet (my money was on the assistant or the husband).
Zero thumbs - it was just very blah, though I was amused by 'buried in the singles strangers section' part.

Sunday 25 November 2018

Game Night

Frat boy (Jonah Hill's brother in Maniac) made me laugh a lot.
Half a thumbs up - I obviously laughed, but overall there was just too much going on and that tilt-shift was stylistically distracting.

Sunday 18 November 2018

Never Let Me Go

But if they are using art to see if you even have a soul, how is the soul interwoven or even 'found' in art?
Half a thumbs up - I followed this better after having skimmed the plot line on Wikipedia.

Saturday 17 November 2018

Billy Madison

This is what the 'Oh clean hair' song was inspired from.
One and a half thumbs up, and remember when Pete Sampras got married to Veronica Vaughn?

Superbad

Josh said his dad loved the beginning scene where they keep talking on their mobiles even as he walks out of the house to the car. I had a patient phone the store, I was talking to him and he rolled by (wheelchair), stopped at the front of the store whilst we conversed still on the phone.
Two thumbs up - I love how everyone has their own small favourite parts of this movie!

Saturday 10 November 2018

Stardust

Two pieces of trivia - it was based on a novel written by Neil Gaiman who also wrote Coraline and American Gods, and Henry Cavill is the rival suitor (my god what a terrible wig!)
Half a thumbs up - soft spot because I had a small this-movie-only crush on Charlie Cox back in high school.

Friday 9 November 2018

The Devil Wears Prada

What kind of insane bubble do you live in to behave like this and get furious over 'wrong' flowers at a function.
One and three quarters thumbs up - and I love how Emily Blunt just hangs up on Andi rather than say anything.

Wednesday 7 November 2018

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Josh's storeroom friend Alex looks like a cross between Bill and Michael Cera.
Three quarters thumbs up - I always thought this was going to be a stoner movie but they are just nice dopey kids.

Monday 5 November 2018

Click

I would use it to fast forward work, so I can still get money but I can just get to home/free time.
Half a thumbs up, and did you know that the lady who plays Adam Sandler's mum in this is Julie Kavner, the voice of Marge Simpson, Selma and Patty!

Saturday 3 November 2018

Goodfellas

"To me, it meant being a somebody in a neighbourhood that was full of nobodies"
This made me understand a bit more why someone with nothing might want to be a mobster - but these guys seriously confuse 'respect' for 'fear'
One thumbs up - it was a good story but hard to like because everyone was so bad, especially crazy Tommy and main guy Henry Hill (buying your sidechick an apartment nearby! Ugh and yuck!)

Friday 2 November 2018

A Star Is Born

Bradley Cooper had to undergo a full body spray tan everyday and endure menthol around his eyes to look bloodshot and high. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga remained bare faced with only a lip balm and moisturiser on majority of the filming.
This is the level of trivia I want from IMDb. Not "these two starred in films that are separate but by the same director" boring stuff.
One thumbs up - it was good as was Lady Gaga who I love, but if she did not win an Oscar, she would not be getting robbed.

Wednesday 31 October 2018

Mean Girls

I can't figure out which catchphrase I use more in real life: "I'm sick *cough cough*/Boo you whore!" or "Alllll yoouuu sucka MC's got nothing on me!"
Two thumbs up - it is so perfect.

Friday 26 October 2018

Inglorious Basterds

Christoph Waltz is even more amazing with each re-watch.
Two thumbs up - there is very little I dislike about this, possibly only the Jew Bear who could have been bigger given his moniker of 'Bear'

Sunday 21 October 2018

A League of Their Own

Rose: "Hey Mae, Mae, your date's here"
Madonna: "How do I look?"
Rosie: "Where'd you get that dress?"
Madonna: "Borrowed it"
Rosie: "It don't fit you, Mae, it's too tight"
Madonna: "I don't plan on wearing it that long"
Rosie: "Ohh. I don't know why you get dressed at all"
This is an underrated exchange hehe.
One and a half thumbs up - and the only other female majority movies I can think of at the moment that do not centre around 'love' or 'relationships' are 'Hidden Figures' and 'The Help' and does 'The Devil Wears Prada' count?

Saturday 20 October 2018

Minority Report

I was walking to the kitchen to get a plate for Josh's lamington, and then the pre-cog suddenly screamed and then I screamed and literally jumped, and scurried back to him.
One and three quarters thumbs up - this and Gattaca are probably my favourite sci-fi movies.

Sunday 14 October 2018

The Truman Show

So... if it is 24 hour cameras on Truman, what happens when they have sex or he wanks? #implications
One thumbs up - I think this was conceived at the perfect time when there was enough technology to believe they can create a world with cameras like this, but also without internet and mobile phones being so widespread to make it harder.

Friday 5 October 2018

The Usual Suspects

There is something strange going on with Benicio Del Toro's face in this, it is a bit plasticy and disconcerting.
One thumbs up - yeah that was good.

Wednesday 3 October 2018

The Inbetweeners Movie

You literally were naked and skinny dipping with a guy 15 mins before you were to meet up with your Greek boyfriend. Again silly white girls always annoy me the most! I think it is the self-righteousness.
One thumbs up - I will always laugh at the dancing.

Monday 1 October 2018

He's Just Not That Into You

Even though they are both as bad as each other, why do I hate ScarJo's character much much more than Bradley Cooper's? I think the white yoga teacher/singer thing does not help.
Zero thumbs up - but good for when it's late and you don't want to think.

Sunday 30 September 2018

Midnight in Paris

Time travel (to the past) truly is a white man's game.
One and three quarter thumbs up - I like this movie very much, and I guess I will have to continue to separate the art from the artist.

Saturday 22 September 2018

40 Year Old Virgin

Seth Rogen was only 22 years old when filming this?! That's an old looking 22 year old!
One thumbs up - but personal thumbs down to me for botching the eclair filling/decoration last night.

Thursday 20 September 2018

Julie and Julia

How can you consider yourself a foodie but have never eaten an egg until you are 29 years old? Yeah nah.
One thumbs up - it is my mediocre guilty pleasure.

Monday 17 September 2018

True Cost

Even at the level of the seed there are environmental and social problems - that is insane and really highlighted how penetrative the problems are at all levels.
One thumbs up - that was really enlightening, and now I am thinking is there a 'fast optics' parallel with all the cheap brands flogging their wares?

Friday 14 September 2018

Crazy Rich Asians

First time in mum and bubs session. Baby Jack looked at me a lot and he was adorable. And a group of tween boys came in as well, probably because tickets were only $10!
Half a thumbs up - it was pretty much exactly what you expected, a lighthearted rom-com nothing special, but it was fun and it was great to see so many Asian faces (and good looking ones!).

Thursday 13 September 2018

Sierra Burgess is a Loser

You hack into a girl's Instagram and spread private stuff, and get away with it with by sending a song and a hug as an apology?! Ridiculous and cowardly - you don't deserve Veronica's help or forgiveness.
One and half thumbs down - wow that was shite - and seriously forgiving of catfishing, which is fucked.

Sunday 9 September 2018

Blackkklansman

K: "Oh hey, the lead actor is Denzel Washington's son!"
J: "Oh that explains it. I didn't want to be racist but I did think he reminded me of Denzel... Training Day!"
One thumbs up - it was good, and what an impact from the end scenes/montage - but it was a bit slow at times; some cuts and edits should have been made. Also, White Power shit is both so stupid and so frightening.

Tuesday 4 September 2018

Elizabeth

So the poisoned dress is entirely fabricated; which I am glad I checked first because I have so many questions about how that would work.
Half a thumbs up - it was mostly background noise whilst I sorted Sri Lanka photos

Sunday 2 September 2018

To All The Boys I've Loved

The single best thing about this (besides being adorable) is that where they could have easily had a white girl lead (which many studios insisted on), they had a gorgeous Asian girl without making a big deal about her Asian-ness - she was just an ordinary sweet girl.
One thumbs up - and the girl is actually adopted from Vietnam in real life!

Saturday 25 August 2018

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

They didn't show dong on the plane.
One thumbs up - and the lady in front of me watched this and Molly's Game too. It was like she was me, but 5 minutes later!

The Disaster Artist

Rebecca watched it as well (on the plane), but she hasn't seen The Room yet. I wonder how much she enjoyed it, and would she have laughed at the times I laughed too?
One and a half thumbs up - I think two thumbs up last year was too hasty.

Molly's Game

Nicole gave me free tickets to this a while ago, and the poster looked so boring (and does not represent anything about the film) that I gave away those free tickets.
Zero thumbs up - it was interesting until the halfway mark, but in the end I really didn't care what her result would be.

Monday 13 August 2018

The Florida Project

It's not sad. It is unfortunate these things have to happen to an "innocent" child, but what do you expect when you are an able-bodied ratbag mother who behaves terribly, refuses to stop swearing/abusing and harrassing/dressing inappropriately to get a proper job and who demonstrates and encourages bad behaviour in her child (a 6 year old twerking, spitting on cars and property, or annoying customers for money for ice cream is not normal childhood adventures).
One thumbs up - it is actually a well-done film, but it makes me angry and angry at myself because it induces thoughts akin to those of a stereotypical conservative old white male. But I guess a film that challenges you or stirs up emotion is good in that it is affecting.

All the Money in the World

I doubt Kevin Spacey could have done as great of a job as Christopher Plummer.
Three quarters thumbs up - and Michelle Williams redeemed herself in my eyes after that insipid performance in Greatest Showman.

The Greatest Showman

"Have a shave, you're not a freak anymore" - Karl Pilkington
As if the bearded lady would have hair-free armpits.
One thumbs down - though this was so lame and entirely glosses over the exploitative and racist things he did; it was the exact type of crap movie I like to watch on the plane, because I would never pay for it or make the effort to download it.

Anastacia

Could not sleep - I think I am too excited and nervous and scared.
One and a quarter thumbs up.

Saturday 11 August 2018

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief

I finally get to OT 3 and they give me the secret materials, which I've been hearing about all this time. They're hand written by Hubbard....... They talk about, you know, the fact that the earth was created, that such and such of trillions of years ago and this guy, who's this space guy... and put them in volcanoes and then blow them up with A-bombs... And we have these lost souls all over us and we have to get rid of them. And I'm going what the fuck are you talking about? I mean, I'm down for the self-help stuff. I'm down for, ok, I can be clear, I can, you know, I can get rid of those, the negative emotions, but what the fuck is this?
- Paul Haggis
One and a half thumbs up - it was really revealing with the Ron L. Hubbard's abuse and bullshit, and it almost feels like they have entered a more sinister era with Miscaviage.

Saturday 4 August 2018

Grease

The main cast already look like they are in their late 20s to 30s, and these guys are like 40 year old somethings getting involved in high school drama.
One thumbs up - it's obviously a fun movie, but it is pretty problematic watching it again as an adult (as opposed to high school bus trips).

Friday 3 August 2018

Blow

Don't get involved with drugs or drug dealing - it is scary and stressful.
Three-quarters thumbs up - Johnny Depp was actually good for the part (despite my well-known dislike for him), and I am so good I could name Emma Roberts/Jaime King for the role of Kristina Sunshine.

Bridesmaids

There are too many events (bachelorette party, bridal shower, actual wedding) where you have to pay for attendance, give them a gift, and pay for your own dress?! Americans are greedy.
A fingernail shy of two thumbs up, and seriously I don't understand what is going on with Maya Rudolph's voice here; you have a lovely normal voice in interviews and other stuff, why why the wispy voice that is also hard on "Milwaukee"

Saturday 28 July 2018

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

"Frost yourself" is a terrible diamonds campaign.
Zero thumbs up - it is pretty bad, but does not stray into negative thumbs yet because the yellow dress is still pretty smashing.

Friday 27 July 2018

Superbad

"Prepare to get fucked by the long dick of the law"
Two thumbs up.

Wednesday 25 July 2018

Catch Me If You Can

Yeah... sitting on your dad's lap as an adult is just weird (also looking at you Monica and Ross).
One thumbs up, and look at how young Leo looks!

Monday 23 July 2018

Total Recall

THREE BOOBS ON THE BIG SCREEN.
One and a half thumbs up - it was actually really good, the Inception of its time, but what was the deal with all those horrifying, scary faces?!

Friday 13 July 2018

Notting Hill

90s fashion is back! The beret and cat-eyed sunglasses! His round glasses!
One and three quarter thumbs up - I got a bit emotional when Julia Roberts did that speech.

The Last Castle

I was told there was going to be a conspiracy about why Robert Redford (OG Brad Pitt!) was in the prison to begin with; but it is just simply a story of bad warden vs. prisoners.
One thumbs down - it was so slow and boring at the start, then the action happens and I fall asleep.

Thursday 12 July 2018

Frances Ha

"It's just this apartment is very... aware of itself" ... and so are the white hipsters of this film/making this film.
Half a thumbs up, oh Frances you awkward foot-in-mouth.

Saturday 7 July 2018

Ant-Man and the Wasp

"Fun but disposable" - Wikipedia
Half a thumbs up; and HERE COME THE PLAYERZ... and Katrina

Thursday 5 July 2018

The Help

It feels a bit hypocritical that Skeeter is interviewing all these other women's stories, but she doesn't interview her current help, nor does she consider that whilst she loved Constantine, that Constantine may have felt very differently about the whole situation (and she was super old and still being put to work??)
One thumbs up, but petty points down for Emma Stone's curled thin upper lip during her tantrum/pout face.

Saturday 23 June 2018

The Notebook

It takes me back to the kayaking afternoons in Nowra, and that heartbreaking old couple where she was screaming for help and he was holding on helplessly.
One thumbs up, and Rachel McAdams has a very nice nose.

Friday 22 June 2018

Big Fish

I used to think my dad was lying about being electrocuted, but it was indeed true.
One and a quarter thumbs up - and big fish points to Josh for being so movie smart (and meme-lord)!

Wednesday 20 June 2018

16 Blocks

The old Asian man (character) and I laughed at the same Yu-Gi-Oh joke at the same time hehe.
Zero thumbs up - interesting first half, then it got dragged out.

Wednesday 13 June 2018

Stand By Me

Wow I would not have realised that was Wil Wheaton if it weren't for a glimpse at the cast names.
One and a half thumbs up - finally watching it in its entirety; and fun fact 'Gordo' (Gordie) means 'fatty' in Spanish.

Monday 11 June 2018

The Big Sick

"I'm fighting over 1400 years of tradition! You were just ugly in high school!" - Kumail
One and a half thumbs up - that was really good, very funny, and cultural without being cliched.

Ocean's Eight

Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter delivered some gold.
One and a quarter thumbs up - that was fun! Could have cut the last 'revelation' out though.

Saturday 9 June 2018

Fist Fight

The bloopers at the end gave me more laughs than the entire movie.
One and a half thumbs down.

Taxi Driver

His behaviour on the second date with Betsy was, if done by anyone else, was very seedy; but there was something sad and endearing-but-not-really about it.
One thumbs up - slightly chauvinistic/terrorist behaviour interpersed with sexy saxaphone.

Saturday 26 May 2018

Singin' In The Rain

Background movie whilst I did these. Sometimes I dedicate too much time for silly little things.
One and three quarters thumbs up - I wish I could give it two thumbs up, but that Broadway dance scene is so unnecessary and disrupts the flow of the film.

Wednesday 23 May 2018

The Lobster

I was particularly amused by everyone's matter-of-fact way of speaking, and that pantomime play about singles vs. couples.
One and a half thumbs up - I love that I have so many questions about this world it is set in, but also hate that there are no definitive answers even from the director.

Friday 18 May 2018

Adaptation

One and a half thumbs down - too meta for Katrina, and I was painfully
reminded of Jim Carrey/Andy Kaufman, which I now realise the coincidence of the surnames.

You've Got Mail

"I know you!" Such a random line, but I like to use it in everyday life.
Two thumbs up.

Deadpool 2

I missed dong because I was busy looking at my ticket to check the end time, to see if I should pee or not?!
Barely a quarter thumbs up - it suffered from a large case of throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks.

Friday 11 May 2018

Iron Man

Oh the good old days when the villains were non-descript Arabs or your greedy business partner.
Half a thumbs up.

Girl, Interrupted

This is where I first learnt the word 'promiscuous'
One and a quarter thumbs up - a bit heavy for this afternoon - and did you know it was based on the author's (Winona Ryder's character) real life experience.

The Age of Adaline

You know how you pash a guy for the first time and then look into his eyes and say "Tell me something I can hold onto forever and never let go" - yeah, so relateable.
One and a half thumbs down - do not trust your 70 year old Asian man patient for movie recommendations - the only thing saving this from two thumbs down is Blake Lively's beautiful face and body.

Saturday 5 May 2018

American History X

It is scary that all you need to do is replace the camcorder with a smart phone and this is still happening in America today.
Two thumbs up - I experienced very visceral reactions to this: I seethed with anger at the ignorant hateful rants by the loser skinheads, I was physically disgusted by the acts of violence in the racist riots - go and see this film.

Monday 30 April 2018

Avengers: Infinity War

What is an Avenger movie without me falling asleep in it? Luckily I woke up in time for the stone showdown and disintegrating people parts.
One thumbs up - I didn't love the constant story switching (though Josh liked it), and whoa at the ending.

Saturday 28 April 2018

Sicario

Bit dull for the first half, but then it picks up.
A quarter thumbs up - and wow to Mr. Benicio Del Toro for being so scary with hardly words.

Friday 27 April 2018

Captain America: Civil War

I thought Wanda was a witch this whole time, but turns out she is an Infinity stone science experiment. Oh.
Three quarters thumbs up - and I think I have been conditioned to fall asleep in Avengers movies.
Epilogue: "You were about to fall asleep five minutes ago, and now you are this *dancing to Spiderman-will-make-you-gay*" - Josh

Isle of Dogs

This might be controversial, but I felt there was no reason for Tracey to be a white girl (as opposed to Japanese) other than to inject some whiteness/white saviour into this.
One and a quarter thumbs up - it was good, but I was also disproportionately annoyed by Akira's yellow eyes (what was the reason for that?!) and his weird teeth clench.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

There were too many things I disliked about this film, but particularly:
1. the colour of Cate Blanchett's too perfect red hair, especially in that scene when she is hit by the car
2. moving the story to New Orleans which meant that we had to listen to what felt like ingenuine accents from everyone.
Half a thumbs down - it was too long, very boring, and I didn't care for anyone except Minnie.

Tuesday 24 April 2018

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

I loved Kevin Hart's hat; it was so dopey.
Three quarters thumbs up - that was fun!

Friday 20 April 2018

The Avengers

Robot sky slugs, slugging all over the place.
One quarter thumbs up - I had to wikipedia the plot until Josh came home because I got confused about Hawkeye.

Mean Girls

There was a guy on the Hamish and Andy podcast who if given any line from an extensive list of movies, could recite the next lines almost perfectly. If there was any movie I could have a shot at that for, it would be this. You go Glen Coco! And none for Gretchen Weiners.
Two thumbs up - modern classic.

Wednesday 11 April 2018

Blue Jasmine

Cate Blanchett just nails that white rich Park Avenue dinner party lady - the voice, the mannerisms, the glazed day-drunk eyes.
One thumbs up, and hey that is Sally Hawkins, the fish-boneing lady (that will be soon on the list).

Saturday 7 April 2018

Call Me By Your Name

As people know, relationship age differences freak me out and this was not helped by two things: firstly, they are supposed to be 17 (underage!) and 24, and secondly, they look younger and older than that!
Half a thumbs up - everything was beautiful (Italian summer! The countryside! Armie Hammer! Timothee!) but it was a bit boring and I think I was missing subtitles for the Italian parts.

Friday 6 April 2018

Get Out

It was only possible for me to watch this because I have read the plot on Wikipedia many times beforehand (this baby needed mental and emotional preparation).
Two thumbs up - that really was so good and extra points for keeping it short but great.

Monday 2 April 2018

Snatch

Thank god for subtitles; I thought Jason Statham was difficult to understand but then we get to Brad Pitt as a pikey.
One thumbs up - it was much better than Lock Stock

Sunday 1 April 2018

Matilda

Apparently Danny Devito has said that if Trump were not born into wealth, he would turn out like Mr. Wormwood - I would agree, especially with the whole anti-intellectualism.
One thumbs up.

Saturday 31 March 2018

The Lovely Bones

I thought the icicle dropping and causing him to fall to his death was a ridiculous deviation the film took; but turns out that was a book original too!
One thumbs down - it is a shame because all the actors were good, it was just the constant silly cuts between present day, the past and purgatory that really ruined it.

Saturday 24 March 2018

Bride Wars

Kate Hudson, take the cotton balls out of your mouth and SPEAK.
One thumbs down - white middle class female stereotypes all over the place.

Friday 23 March 2018

Billy Elliot

I imagine this is the kind of area Karl Pilkington is from.
One and three quarters thumbs up, and I cried when the dad had to cross the picket line.

Friday 9 March 2018

Room

The scene with the interview is really insult to injury.
One and a quarter thumbs up - the boy actor was brilliant.

Monday 5 March 2018

Black Panther

I should have brought socks with me; my feet were so cold.
One thumbs up - thought it was a bit slow to begin with, but the evil cousin part was interesting.

Wednesday 28 February 2018

50 Shades Freed

There was this old Asian couple (70s) watching just behind us. The whole time I kept wondering if they decided to watch this on purpose, or if they didn't know what they were getting themselves into. And everytime there was a sex scene, I kept sneaking glances at them to see their reactions. Not much to report besides that halfway in the movie, the man took out a bag of chips from their backpack and ate some chips. I wonder if I looked like a pervert for staring at them haha.
One thumbs down - that was by far the worst one in the series; least sex but more shitty plotlines.

Sunday 25 February 2018

Battle of the Sexes

There was waaay too much emphasis on Marilyn the hairdresser, who doesn't even end up being a long-term partner!
Zero thumbs up - no seriously, the hairdresser coming on tour really annoyed me (What a mooch. So the WTA just pays for her flights and accommodation and food? For being the 'tour hairdresser'?! Pfft)

Saturday 24 February 2018

I, Tonya

We had to move seats because the selfish b*tch next to Josh kept her foot up against the chair in front of Josh! (and she put her choc top wrapper on his seat and didn't even move it)
One thumbs up - it is hard to believe Tonya was only 23 years young when all this happened.

Wednesday 21 February 2018

Superbad

Recently learnt that Jason has never seen Superbad! I think he has been pretending to laugh when we quote lines "she wants my dick in and around her mouth"
Two thumbs up - it was on TV and I can't not watch it.

Saturday 17 February 2018

A League of Their Own

PEACH!! I'm a (Rochford) peach!!
One and a half thumbs up - eating pizza and garlic bread on my last night in to myself; I wanted to watch Mean Girls but I didn't have it, so this will do nicely in the meantime.

Thursday 15 February 2018

Ladybird

Ladybird and her mother's relationship reminded me at times of Josh and his mum - the little interrupting questions, the nit-picking, being easily annoyed or angry, but always love in the end.
Just shy of two thumbs up - I loved it! It was funny and so heartfelt without being saccharine, but I can't bring myself to give it full marks yet (maybe with time).

Murder on the Orient Express

"If you will forgive me, I do not like your face"
EXACTLY how I feel about Johnny Depp's face *clap clap clap*
One thumbs up, oh I really enjoyed that!

Tuesday 13 February 2018

Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle

The ex-girlfriend lead was dubious at best - a few social media links doesn't mean she would be involved with him - that was a lot of effort for a slim chance at best.
Zero thumbs - Channing Tatum and that Pedro guy were just wasted and unnecessary.

Saturday 10 February 2018

My Neighbour Totoro

"Mei watched them all day, everyday, waiting for them to sprout.
And it is starting to make her crabby. Here is a picture of her as a crab"
Saski? (Satsuki) is a wonderfully patient and sweet older sister - I would have been pissed off at some many things much sooner.
One and a half thumbs up - I can see why it is so beloved.

Wednesday 7 February 2018

Anastasia

(During the scene where the Grandmother speaks to Anastasia behind the curtains)
Why am I almost about to cry and be very emotional?
One and a half thumbs up - and hopefully Anastasia will soon be a Disney princess!

Monday 5 February 2018

Kill Bill: Vol. 1

In light of some power play things Tarantino did to Uma Thurman in her piece about Weinstein - would you allow behind-the-scenes knowledge/facts to affect how you feel about a film? It was certainly a bit more difficult to watch the Gogo/Bride choke scene now.
One and three quarters thumbs up - are the lines between art, artist, context and private lives very blurred now?

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Frances McDormand completely deserved that Golden Globe as she was amazing; but I am also so glad Sam Rockwell got a win too because he was so good!
One and three quarters thumbs up, but personal thumbs down to Abbie Cornish who was distractingly bad/miscast - she was worse than the CGI deer that turned out to be a real deer.

27 Dresses

I have been waiting for this to be on Netflix for ages!
One thumbs up - I like this movie a lot more than I should (proper guilty pleasure?)

Raiders of the Lost Ark

It was really good until they opened the ark - then things got too firey/silly for me.
One thumbs up - and to all the cousins who made up and teased me that I had a crush on Harrison Ford, joke is on you because he was quite the hottie back in the day!

Groundhog Day

The groundhog thing is a total farce. I thought the groundhog would pop up from the tree trunk, and then we would see if it saw its own shadow or not. Not pretending to whisper to the groundhog and then just make up the result. RIP. OFF.
One and a quarter thumbs up - quite enjoyed that, but more surprisingly, Andie McDowell was likeable for the first time ever.

Jaws

The police chief's children are grossly unsupervised - his 4 year old child is in a boat and the adults are in the house. 70s parenting!
One bloody thumbs up - lots of good scare jumps.
