BEST OF THE DECADE (2010 - 2019)

BEST OF THE DECADE
2010: Inception
2011: Midnight in Paris
2012: Moonrise Kingdom
2013: About Time
2014: The Grand Budapest Hotel
2015: The Lobster
2016: La La Land
2017: Get Out
2018: The Favourite
2019: Parasite

Honourable mentions to The Social Network (2010), Bridesmaids (2011), Django Unchained (2012), Chef (2014), Ex Machina (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Brooklyn (2015), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Lady Bird (2017), The Disaster Artist (2017), Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri (2017), Spiderman: Homecoming (2017) and Detective Pikachu (2019).

Monday 30 December 2019

I'm Still Here

I obviously remember the Letterman interview, but I had completely forgotten about the nightclub fight.
Half a thumbs up - it is amazing he kept this up for two years, and it is sort of surreal watching this after Joker because there are some similar scenes or concepts.

Sunday 29 December 2019

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Josh: So before we watch this, I need to remind you of some stuff. Remember Emperor Palpatine?
Katrina: Is he the wrinkly giant hologram guy?
No.
But he is a wrinkly white guy.
Yes.
Wait, who is Darth Maul? Is he the red and black striped guy?
Yes.
So who is the Emperor?
He was in the original trilogy. Darth Vader killed him at the end of Episode 6: Return of the Jedi.
How did he kill him?
He pushed him down -
The garbage chute?
No! It was down a pipe.
Oh okay. Was the Emperor Alec Guinness? No, he was Ben Kenobi. Are they bringing him back for this one?
No. Also Alec Guinness is dead.
He is also 'genuine class'.
*LOUD CLAPPING and cry laughter* from me to me, for my good one!
*
Oh Joshie, I will miss trolling Star Wars with you.
One and a quarter thumbs up - Finn's character has been really shafted since #7; and after fidgeting on the flip up seats for ages, I dozed off for a bit during an emotional scene.

Saturday 28 December 2019

The Sound of Music

Did you know that this is based on a real-life Maria Von Trapp who married into a similar family and also escaped Nazi-annexed Austria? (though it was openly by train)
One and a half thumbs up - the nostalgia is real, I still love it, and the Nazi stuff at the end is still intense (for a family movie!). Daniel demanded answers about that escape though.

Friday 27 December 2019

Synedoche, New York

If I could personify this movie, it would be a neurotic middle-aged man who identifies as a "creative" but is in fact boring and selfish. Oh wait, that is exactly the lead character we follow and I honestly could not give a shit about the dumb drama he dreams up for himself.
Two thumbs down - I am not having a good run with Charlie Kaufman, and this makes me apprehensive for "Being John Malkovich" even though I've heard that is good.

Ladybird

Saoirse Ronan is perfection in everything. Timothee Chalamet on the other hand, I secretly believe is exactly like the in-denial-rich-kid character he plays.
Two thumbs up - I love how real and sweet it is; how it pulls at your heartstrings in a not-sappy way.

Monday 23 December 2019

Love Actually

Perfect background movie whilst I ice the (slightly deformed) gingerbread men.
One and three quarters thumbs up - yeah I know it is 'problematic' yadda yadda yadda and I've knocked off a quarter thumbs off for that, but whatever, I still love it and I will watch it every Christmas.

Wednesday 18 December 2019

Little Women (2019)

Have always had a soft spot for Amy, so I loved this take on Amy... except for her low voice! I wish she had put on a more sweet trilling voice for the younger years at least!
One and a half thumbs up - I really enjoyed it, but I felt that flashbacks detracted from really developing a lot of relationships (Jo with Laurie, her sisters individually). I want to get my hands on this and re-cut it to be chronological order and it would be beautiful!

Friday 13 December 2019

The Irishman

This sounds obvious, but De Niro is a really good actor! Even when he doesn't have lines, his reactions are so nuanced.
One thumbs up - it was good, but it really did not need to be that long Scorsese. It took us a week and a half to get through it!

Knives Out

Thanks Josh for watching this with me. I know you could have gone with school for free, but you waited to watch with me.
One and a half thumbs up - I really liked it! It was like an Agatha Christie novel, but for today. Also "He's (Chris Evans) is so dreamy!"

Tuesday 10 December 2019

Aquaman

Not sure what was worse, the dialogue or Willem Dafoe's stupid top-knot hair.
One and a half thumbs down - stop trying to make Amber Heard (or Cara Delevingne), it's not going to happen.

Wednesday 27 November 2019

Mean Girls

Josh is teaching the Year 10's Jingle Bell Rock, and I said "have you seen Mean Girls" because the dance is everything.
Two thumbs up - this is all banger, and no fillers. It is perfection. Okay maybe except the Anthony/Anfernee joke because it does not translate well when spoken.

Saturday 23 November 2019

Ford vs. Ferrari

Did you know that in most countries it goes by the title "Le Mans 66". Only in North America (and obviously Australia too) is it marketed as "Ford vs. Ferrari".
One and a half thumbs up.
"Andrea claims (sic) her favourite movie of the year BUT she hasn't seen Parasite so she's wrong" - Nicole. It was very good, and was interesting the whole way through despite being almost 3 hours, but Nicole is so right.

Friday 22 November 2019

Marriage Story

I see why divorce is the second most stressful thing that can happen to you, behind death.
One and a half thumbs up - it goes into the category of great movie I don't want to watch again because I was an emotional wreck after that.

Saturday 16 November 2019

Last Christmas

So we accidentally went to a Mum and Bubs session... luckily Jenny had J'Pepper there hehe.
Half a thumbs up - it needed much more romance and sex! Wasted opportunity given two hot leads! Side note: I laugh/cried at 'lesbian pudding' for a good 5 minutes.

Wednesday 13 November 2019

Tell Me Who I Am

I had accidentally read a spoiler feature article, and it was still fucking intense.
One thumbs up - but I must admit I smiled to myself at how British some of their words and mannerisms were, despite how dark this is.

Monday 11 November 2019

The Nice Guys

I think both Amelia and her mum are taking this way too far for what it is worth.
Zero thumbs up - eh, I can see why there wasn't much fanfare about this movie. Please don't make a sequel.

Sunday 10 November 2019

Clueless

I started speaking like Cher for a few days after this. It was strange.
One thumbs up - Paul Rudd is cute and all, but... he is still your step-brother! Couldn't they have chosen some other relationship? Like your lawyer dad's intern? Probably too obvious.

Friday 8 November 2019

Singin' In The Rain

I can't believe that in all the time I have watched this and read the trivia, that 'Singin' In The Rain' was a real song before the movie!
-----
Old Man walks out. Cinema usher: "How was it Terence?" Terence: "Everytime I watch it, I like it"
Me too Terence, me too.
-----
Two thumbs up with the only minor negative being that stupid 'Broadway Melody' dance sequence - it cost $600 000 to make (back in those days!) and it is so long and unnecessary.

Tuesday 22 October 2019

Hustlers

The biggest crime was Constance Wu's fringe and Cardi B's voice.
Half a thumbs up - but personal thumbs up to J. Lo who is SLAMMING and SO HOT RIGHT NOW. This was hotter than that car boot scene with George Clooney... and Maid in Manhattan (not hot, but this rivals MiM as her best performance).

Monday 7 October 2019

The Bonfire of the Vanities

By about 15 minutes into the movie we had deducted that it was terrible, but mostly because of terrible acting and cinematography - it was like they were allergic to having the camera at eye-level, but were having a sale on unnecessarily extreme angles and dolly zooms. Then we read about how at the time it an epic box office fail and attracted a lot of negative reviews and criticisms. Deservedly so.
Two thumbs down - more like Trash-fire of Vanities. You think Kim Cattrell's accent was terrible then you get hit with the hot mess called Maria who had an insanely bad accent and was casually super racist.

Sunday 6 October 2019

Parasite

This sums up why this blog will never feature horror films - because I am a baby and a chicken.
Two thumbs up - that was so much better than it reads on Wikipedia! But seriously, it was everything in a good way - drama, thriller, comedy (to my initial disbelief when Nicole said that), sad, and also social commentary.

Thursday 3 October 2019

Joker

In contrast to Josh, I found the use of the pop/rock music jarring because it made certain scenes have a 'rockstar' or 'red carpet' feel, which just felt very inappropriate.
Zero thumbs up - I am conflicted because it was well done, but I felt it was sympathetic and glorifying of some really violent and grotesque stuff, as well as serious mental issues. Also, personal thumbs down to the family who brought their three or four year old daughter to this movie - that was also fucked up.

Tuesday 1 October 2019

The Farewell

I liked the cemetery scene the best - even though it wasn't the funniest, I just loved seeing all those relatable moments and rituals. Also reminds me of how funnily morbid and badass it is to see our own grandma sitting on her future grave during these events.
One and a half thumbs up - it was better than I expected and I genuinely cry/laughed at the uncle's wedding speech.

Sunday 29 September 2019

The Blind Side

It is one of Annie's favourite movies; and she likes the part where Sandra Bullock does the blind side talk at their training.
One and a quarter thumbs up - and it was a much-needed games sesh, even though I came last in the game that counted.

Monday 23 September 2019

A Star Is Born

I always interpreted the SNL scene as Ally being a bit "musically lame" or "selling out" - I didn't realise that was meant to represent a high pinnacle until I read the IMDb trivia. Oops!
One thumbs up - Lady Gaga is amazing and I love her.

Friday 20 September 2019

Big

Tom Hanks was nominated for an Oscar for this role; he was fantastic in, but I guess you just don't think this type of family friendly comedy is Oscar fare. It would be like Billy Madison or Kindergarten Cop getting nominations.
One and a quarter thumbs up - it was very sweet and I loved the small child-like details (e.g. running with flailing arms, eating baby corn).

Thursday 19 September 2019

Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindewald

It followed way too many characters no-one cares about on boring plot-lines, and all the answers came too forced and late.
One thumbs down - it was really bad, and made worse by stupid rat face Johnny Depp.

Dirty Dancing

I surprised myself by mostly being not grossed out by Johnny and Baby's underage-age difference.
One thumbs up - oh sweet Penny I hope the best for you!

Wednesday 18 September 2019

Bachelor Party

"This is going to be a risky download.... are you sure you don't want Bachelor Party Fuck Fest 7?" - Josh. Yes I am sure.
Two thumbs down - basically every bad or raunchy marriage/bachelor party/stripper/80s stereotype/mullet (men and women) is chucked into this terrible terrible lame movie.

Tuesday 17 September 2019

Wolf of Wall Street

Just like Tony Soprano, these scummy men have no interest in their children until the divorce, and then it is all "MY KIDS!" Deadbeat dads, just rich.
One and a quarter thumbs up - Leo crawling to his car is never not funny.

Friday 13 September 2019

Crazy Rich Asians

What is with everyone calling her by her full name "Rachel Chu". I don't meet a friend's new partner and go "Oh hi firstname/lastname". That would be strange.
One thumbs up - it's fun, Gemma Chan's Astrid grew on me more, but the real winner is Michelle Yeoh who is amazing!

Saturday 7 September 2019

Apollo 13

Apparently at a test screening, someone commented that the ending was unbelievable and "too Hollywood". *shakes head*
One and a quarter thumbs up - can you imagine being an actor or cameraman on this, having to go to work each day and get inside the 'Vomit Comet'? Oh the dread!

Friday 30 August 2019

Kiki's Delivery Service

Jiji was hilarious!!
One thumbs up - I liked that it was more simple than other Studio Ghibli films, but it was still very sweet.

Wednesday 28 August 2019

700 POSTS ANNIVERSARY!

And with that, we reach 700 posts!!
Celebrating this milestone, because I mis-calculated and missed the blog's 5th year birthday some years ago.

Summary

The blog has been activate since 15th October 2011 with first movie "Billy Elliot" and Andrea's reaction, which prompted me to record that.
700 movies have been recorded. There are 509 unique movie titles, although I think the true number is actually 500ish because of accidental duplicates and some promos or advertisements sneaking their way in.
Out of the 700 posts, thumbs up has been rewarded 581 times (83%), zero thumbs awarded 34 times (4.86%), thumbs down awarded 75 times (10.71%) and no thumbs applied or miscellaneous ratings 10 times (1.43%).

Frequency

My most watched movie (to no surprise) is "You've Got Mail" with 11 viewings. It also miraculously received a perfect two thumbs up each of those 11 times. I think this really secures it as my favourite movie, and will now OFFICIAL, throwing the de facto "Moulin Rouge" off the list. Moulin Rouge does not appear on the blog at all since 2011, which is surprising because I swear I have watched it (but probably did not finish it; hence no record).
Next come "Bridesmaids" (10), "Love Actually" and "Midnight in Paris" (8) and rounding out fifth spot are "Mean Girls", "Superbad" and "The Devil Wears Prada" (7). All of these should come as no surprise to myself, or people who know me.
I was surprised that the following made it high up the list in terms of frequency: "A League of Their Own", "About A Boy", "The Inbetweeners Movie", "Chef", "The Blind Side", "The Help", "The Proposal".
Also surprised I have only seen "Singin' In the Rain" and "Ratatouille" twice each in eight years. I love those movies, I would have thought I watched them much more.

Two Thumbs Up

Two thumbs up has been rewarded 126 times, to 66 unique movie titles. First place goes to "You've Got Mail" again with 11 two thumbs up!
Next come "Love Actually" (7), "Superbad" (7), "Mean Girls" (6) and rounding out fifth spot are "Finding Nemo" and "Midnight in Paris" (5).
Some movies that I awarded two thumbs up at the time, but are shocking to me now include “Bad Grandpa”, “Chennai Express”, “Iron Sky”, “Les Miserables”, “Life of Pi”, “Police Academy”, “Ruby Sparks”, “Silver Linings Playbook”, “Skyfall”, “The Bank Job”, “The Descendants”, “This Is The End”. WHAT WAS I THINKING?!
"Zoolander" (2013 viewing) received ten billion thumbs up...

Two Thumbs Down

The stinkers.
Do NOT watch “Don’t Mess with the Zohan”, “Somewhere”, “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues”, “College”, “Empire Records” (controversial I know), “Bad Moms”, “Man on the Moon”, “Tiptoes”. Save yourself the time and do something better with your life.
"Damsels in Distress" received minus ten thumbs down...
I have never repeated viewing of any of the thumbs down movie titles. I am not an idiot.

Special Mentions

32 people were mentioned by name, in 122 reviews. 1 dog was mentioned, Snitzel!
As expected, Josh leads the pack with 54 special mentions.
Next come Dad (9), Daniel (8), Nicole (6) and Snitzel (6). Apologies to many people who got fewer shout-outs than Snitzel the dog.

Other Random Stuff

In eight years, I have seen Toy Story 3 twice, but have not watched Toy Story or Toy Story 2 in its entirety.
I am not consistent. See "Avengers Infinity War (25.01.2019) vs. Endgame (26.04.2019)" and "Deadpool (14.02.2016) vs. Deadpool 2 (18.05.2018)" for ratings that do not match the sentiment.

Conclusion

So now you know a lot about me based purely on my movie viewing patterns. You will probably judge me for the quality and calibre of movies that I love. But whatever; I love what I love, and I will gobble up my comfort-movies like a fat kid eats cake.

Thank you to everyone for following this so far. By everyone, I mean like 3 - 4 people, you know who you are.

Love, Katrina

Tuesday 27 August 2019

You've Got Mail

I am about to embark on my weekly Tom Hanks movie session for HonkForHanks, which means technically I can't watch You've Got Mail for another year because it is last on the list... I don't think I can last that long!
Two thumbs up - I love this so much, hopefully for forever and ever.

Saturday 24 August 2019

First Man

They referred to what I consider one of the most interesting facts about the moon landing, which was the speech prepared for President Nixon "In the Event of a Moon Disaster" if they could not get Armstrong and Aldrin back from the moon. Luckily it never had to be read.
Three quarters thumbs up - it really demonstrated all the difficulties and tragedies associated with it, but it was very slow for most of it.

Tuesday 20 August 2019

My Cousin Vinny

I was just saying Marisa Tomei is good but I don't think she is in this enough to win an Oscar, and then she gets her time on the stand. Cute.
One and a quarter thumbs up - and now Josh can't complain that I didn't watch it anymore.

Friday 16 August 2019

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood

No, it was not close to overtaking my favourites "Kill Bill" or "Inglorious Basterds"
One and a quarter thumbs up - the first half was full of waffle and way too long. I reckon I could have cut 45 mins and it wouldn't change the story or essence at all.

Monday 12 August 2019

The Terminal

Roughly based on this Iranian man who was in Charles De Gaulle for 18 years... although part of it seemed unnecessarily protracted by his demands.
One thumbs up - but I couldn't say I feel good after this - there is something about people asking/pleading for help but not being understood because of language barrier that really upsets me.

Friday 9 August 2019

Inglorious Basterds

After the movie, the Asian guys next to us were cacking themselves over the Italian hand gesture... it was funny!
Two thumbs up! It was really cool seeing it on the big screen again

Sunday 4 August 2019

Jackie Brown

It didn't feel like a Tarantino - bit grainy, too many excessive face close-ups, and it felt like it was missing a soundtrack or score for most of it.
Slow burn three quarters thumbs up - it was a good story, but I feel he needs to go back and remake it with more Tarantino gloss. I see why it is "nobody's favourite"

Friday 2 August 2019

The Devil Wears Prada

I asked Josh if he would be mad if I had to miss his birthday for a last-minute work event. He said that would be fine. What was not fine was the year I took the day off to watch the Superbowl, but not for his birthday. Well that back-fired.
Two thumbs up - it was great background TV during an improptu 7 Wonders session.

Tuesday 30 July 2019

The Help

It is so much fun to hate on Hilly.
One and a quarter thumbs up - my last night of access to Stan (and Snitzel!) and of course I choose a movie I have watched many times before.

Friday 12 July 2019

Spiderman: Far From Home

Zendaya you have done a 180 on me, you were really endearing in this one!
One and a quarter thumbs up - but if you really want endearing, also go and watch interviews with Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal together.

Sunday 7 July 2019

The Third Wife

Well that went into a lot of territory I was absolutely not expecting.
Half a thumbs up - the characters were not clearly set up at the beginning so all of us got confused about who was whom, or what their family relationship was... which was very pivotal for many scenes.

Saturday 6 July 2019

Atomic Blonde

I really liked the action scenes, particularly the last one - it actually felt realistic because she stumbles and falls, enemies don't wait their turn to attack, and people didn't just die instantly.
One thumbs up - it was pretty good! And has a hot Charlize Theron lesbian sex scene (just sayin')

Friday 5 July 2019

Chef

Percy is a good kid.
One and a half thumbs up - and now I am wondering which relative was the one who brought the amazing Texas BBQ sauce years ago.

Tuesday 25 June 2019

Death of Stalin

Steve Buscemi doing to slow box step to switch places during the funeral was gold!
One and a half thumbs up to all the orphaned "Russian cubs, Georgian cubs, Armenian cubs, Lithuanian cubs..."   - it was hilarious!

Thursday 20 June 2019

Solo

"And then the idiot robot - that wasn't it's name, but I am going to call it that - the idiot robot and Denny Glover..." - Josh recapping it for me, because I fell asleep.
Zero thumbs up.

Tuesday 11 June 2019

Miss Congeniality

Teenage me thought this was the sassiest line ever.
One and a half thumbs up - it is still a fun movie!

Sunday 9 June 2019

Captain America: The First Avenger

I love how this was not scripted but she was compelled to touch him. Isn't that all of us?
One thumbs up - I fell asleep and missed out a lot, including the fact that he was not cryogenically frozen as I always thought.

Friday 7 June 2019

The Hitman's Bodyguard

Action scene sounds are my soothing whale noises - I will fall asleep.
One thumbs down - the flashbacks were so badly done and timed.

Saturday 1 June 2019

Always be My Maybe

“What happens when you populate a movie with a lot of Asian-American people is that they get to be people. They don’t have to be the Asian person in the movie...If someone had to describe Jenny they’re not going to be like, Oh, you know, the Asian girlfriend. They’re going to be like, Oh, that quirky girlfriend with the dreadlocks who made that weird spaghetti.” - Ali Wong

Three quarters thumbs up - enjoying Ali Wong rocking the entire DITA optical range, and literally laughing out loud at the awesomeness that was Keanu Reeves.

Thursday 30 May 2019

About Time

"It's a strange concept, but I don't mind it.... I think it might be because it is British" - Josh
One and a half thumbs up - I'm not crying, you are!

Wednesday 29 May 2019

Bachelorette

What a waste of so many cool actresses and actors.
One and a half thumbs down - it attempts to be a raunchy dark comedy, but it was just shit.

Friday 24 May 2019

Now You See Me 2

I enjoyed Daniel Radcliffe and Lizzy Caplan.
Zero thumbs up - they are relying way too much on 'hypnosis' to do stuff, as if that is reliable.

Friday 17 May 2019

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu

Trailer: Looks lame, Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu is a terrible decision!
Movie: Amazing, nostalgic in the best way possible, Pikachu is SO GODDAMN CUTE and you love everything about him
Me:

Two thumbs up! I absolutely loved it, and I absolutely did not expect to at all. Also personal thumbs up to Nicole who uttered this gem "Oh, so they are looking for Pikachu's dad?"

Friday 10 May 2019

Kill Bill: vol 1

Kill Bill double billing but we didn't go because we have graduation tomorrow morning.
Two thumbs up - it was amazing seeing and hearing it on the big screen!

Tuesday 7 May 2019

No Country For Old Men

I was going to say he has the highest ratio of creepy:silly hair, but then I remembered Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka exists *shudder*
One thumbs up.

Saturday 4 May 2019

Now You See Me

Yvonne likes this movie (so not what I expected) because it is magic heist - now I am wondering does Yvonne like the heist part or the magic part? Or specifically both? I will have to ask her.
12/05/2019 Edit: It's both.
Half a thumbs up - I was definitely intrigued but overall the plot was mostly too silly.

Saturday 27 April 2019

Bridget Jones Diary

Hehe I can watch this no matter my mood of what I am doing.
Two thumbs up!

Friday 26 April 2019

Avengers: Endgame

I literally squealed and felt something inside of me when Thor's hammer flew into Captain America's hands! *fans self*
One and a half thumbs up - ironically this is the first Avengers movie I didn't fall asleep in, however I preferred Infinity War.

Friday 19 April 2019

Brooklyn

Oh poor sweet Jim; and poor darling Tony waiting! I love everyone.
One and a three quarters thumbs up - Saoirse Ronan is so beautiful and wonderful in this.

Saturday 13 April 2019

The Other Guys

I forgot about the accidental TLC references - that was funny.
Zero thumbs up - maybe I am becoming more woke (am I using that correctly?) but Marky Mark was really showing off that toxic masculine side.

Saturday 6 April 2019

Gone Girl

I missed out on dong in the cinema so I made a point to really concentrate in that scene... and the dong is all in the shadows!
One and a half thumbs up - so unnervingly good - and whilst we are on this David Fincher roll, turns out we really like a lot of his films.

Friday 5 April 2019

Superbad

I didn't have any want to drink in high school so it is really nice seeing Emma Stone's character like that too despite being hot and popular.
Two thumbs up - Superbad is perfect for anything.

Sunday 31 March 2019

Zodiac

They CGI-ed hair onto Jake Gyllenhall's hands because it was too hairless and pretty - now this really is a fun fact.
One thumbs up - I still got spooked a bit, even though it is not horror.

Friday 22 March 2019

Scent of a Woman

Disciplinary trials in front of the whole school... yeah no one is doing that any more.
Half a thumbs up - it was enjoyable although I still detest the title 'Scent of a Woman' - such a flimsy connection.

Friday 15 March 2019

Captain Marvel

How come Jude Law is Kree but not blue? I bet it is because he is too big a star to cover his beautiful face in blue paint.
Three quarters thumbs up - it was alright but the 90s thing was a bit of a stretch.

Saturday 2 March 2019

If Beale Street Could Talk

I thought Rachel Weisz in 'The Favourite' was robbed of the Supporting Actress Oscar; granted without having seen 'Beale Street'. Now I am even more convinced she was robbed! Regina King for 15 minutes was absolutely not better than Rachel Weisz. I am so miffed!
Half a thumbs up - it was pretty and I know you are trying to make this intimate, but my god Barry Jenkins not every single shot has to be slow and lingering. What a drag.

Tuesday 26 February 2019

Liar Liar

The mum looks like a refined Pam (from The Office).
One and a quarter thumbs up - this is a childhood favourite, however points down to the internet because I cannot find a GIF of the lame claw.

Friday 22 February 2019

The Hangover

So this was just supposed to be background movie whilst I some Dr. Mario. I got carried away and  accidentally ended up playing for the entire movie length. Josh is not going to be happy.
One and a half thumbs up!

Monday 18 February 2019

Casino

De Niro rocking the colourful suits and pastel silk bathrobes.
One and a third thumbs up - I was much more interested in this than I thought I would be which was good, though I was a bit let down by the abrupt ending.

Friday 15 February 2019

On The Basis of Sex

I was so close to having the whole cinema to myself... and then an old lady walked in.
Three quarter thumbs up - it was alright; never thought I would be interested in following a case about tax law.

Thursday 14 February 2019

The Grand Budapest Hotel

John is going to grow up to be Monsieur Gustave.
One and a quarter thumbs up - I find this the prettiest of Wes Anderson's films but I am always bored during the snow scene (I dozed off for a bit again!)

Friday 8 February 2019

Abducted in Plain Sight

Obviously Berchtold the paedophile man is the monster here, but I am left feeling more angry and frustrated at the idiot parents who are more concerned about their image in their Mormon community than their daughter.
One thumbs up - I was still shocked watching it even though I already read up on most of the details prior to watching.

Saturday 2 February 2019

The Darjeeling Limited

This is probably the most adult themed Wes Anderson movie, what with the sex, nudity and death - I like it.
One and a half thumbs up, and I forgot about the pepper spray part - that was really funny!

Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened

It's true, my first reaction was to mock these silly rich Insta-wannabe attendees until I decided that no matter their wealth, they still got ripped off and stranded; and then you learn how it ruined the locals and employees too.
One thumbs up - that was fascinating to see each step of this shitstorm happen.

Friday 25 January 2019

Avengers: Infinity War

Josh: "I knew you were asleep in this part because everyone went *gasp* and you stayed silent"
One and a quarter thumbs up

Wednesday 23 January 2019

Spiderman: Homecoming

You think voluntarily going to detention and laughing at your teacher because you are "sketching people in crisis" makes you edgy? No, you just look like a high school emo loser.
One and a half thumbs up - Tom Holland and Michael Keaton were perfectly cast, but as you can see, I am severely annoyed by Zendaya.

Monday 21 January 2019

Tiptoes

Matthew McConaughy knocks up Kate Beckinsale, however is concerned the baby will be a midget because surprise his whole family are midgets. However instead of being sensitive to the possible challenges, he becomes an asshole and shits on everyone who are all actually being caring in this situation. Oh and he kicks Kate and midget baby out of the house and she ends up hooking up with his midget brother Gary Oldman and they live in a cabin with bad French Peter Dinklage.
Two thumbs down - wow... just... so inappropriate wow. It makes "The Room" look like a coherent masterpiece.

The Founder

His behaviour and gall at the end leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
Half a thumbs up - boring protagonist for the majority of the film (any scenes with the McDonald brothers were much more interesting) until the end when he became a shark, figuratively.

Vice

And all I knew about Dick Cheney before this was that he shot someone during a hunting trip.
One and a half thumbs up - feeling unsettled after this, however I do think some scenes in the end montage are a bit of a stretch in their association with him.

Roma

"... it's an intimate portrait of the women who raised me in a recognition of love as a mystery that transcends space, memory and time"  - Alfonso Cuaron
One and a half thumbs up, it is both slow but beautifully emotional

The Favourite

A thought process:
Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone - love them but still borderline. From the director of 'The Lobster'? Okay I am definitely seeing this. Olivia Coleman wins best actress and gives hilarious speech? Decision re-affirmed.
Two thumbs up - it was exquisite and funny and perfect. We are not even a fortnight into 2019 and this is a crazy early call, but this will probably be the best movie I see all year.

Chef

This scene is legitimately a bit of a turn on for me... I remember it so vividly.
One and a half thumbs up - I keep it enjoying it each re-watch.

Colette

This was recommended to me by my Korean artist patient who despite enjoying the 'women's freedom, sexuality' topics of this, I think has been burnt by a man in the past because she always tells me slightly inappropriate things like 'don't leave it too late to get married and have a child' but also 'beware of white men'.
Three quarters thumbs up - it was interesting, and Keira Knightley is so beautiful and captivating.

"The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down"

Oh no the road is unfinished, MORE SPEED!!
One hour later...
Oh no the track is unfinished, MORE SPEED!!
One and a half thumbs up, but the best part was the fact that 'Speed' is the first thing that pops up when you google "bus that couldn't slow down"

About A Boy

Granola hippies as a stereotype, really seem to like clothes with toggle buttons... I wonder why?
One and a half thumbs up.

Training Day

It is strange that Denzel was 'lead actor' and Ethan Hawke was 'supporting actor' even though he had more screen time. They should have been both 'lead'
One thumbs up - Denzel was good, but not better than Russell-Crowe-Beautiful-Mind/Academy-Award-winner good.
