I'm Still Here

I obviously remember the Letterman interview, but I had completely forgotten about the nightclub fight.
Half a thumbs up - it is amazing he kept this up for two years, and it is sort of surreal watching this after Joker because there are some similar scenes or concepts.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Josh: So before we watch this, I need to remind you of some stuff. Remember Emperor Palpatine?
Katrina: Is he the wrinkly giant hologram guy?
No.
But he is a wrinkly white guy.
Yes.
Wait, who is Darth Maul? Is he the red and black striped guy?
Yes.
So who is the Emperor?
He was in the original trilogy. Darth Vader killed him at the end of Episode 6: Return of the Jedi.
How did he kill him?
He pushed him down -
The garbage chute?
No! It was down a pipe.
Oh okay. Was the Emperor Alec Guinness? No, he was Ben Kenobi. Are they bringing him back for this one?
No. Also Alec Guinness is dead.
He is also 'genuine class'.
*LOUD CLAPPING and cry laughter* from me to me, for my good one!
*
Oh Joshie, I will miss trolling Star Wars with you.
One and a quarter thumbs up - Finn's character has been really shafted since #7; and after fidgeting on the flip up seats for ages, I dozed off for a bit during an emotional scene.

The Sound of Music

Did you know that this is based on a real-life Maria Von Trapp who married into a similar family and also escaped Nazi-annexed Austria? (though it was openly by train)
One and a half thumbs up - the nostalgia is real, I still love it, and the Nazi stuff at the end is still intense (for a family movie!). Daniel demanded answers about that escape though.

Synedoche, New York

If I could personify this movie, it would be a neurotic middle-aged man who identifies as a "creative" but is in fact boring and selfish. Oh wait, that is exactly the lead character we follow and I honestly could not give a shit about the dumb drama he dreams up for himself.
Two thumbs down - I am not having a good run with Charlie Kaufman, and this makes me apprehensive for "Being John Malkovich" even though I've heard that is good.

Ladybird

Saoirse Ronan is perfection in everything. Timothee Chalamet on the other hand, I secretly believe is exactly like the in-denial-rich-kid character he plays.
Two thumbs up - I love how real and sweet it is; how it pulls at your heartstrings in a not-sappy way.

Love Actually

Perfect background movie whilst I ice the (slightly deformed) gingerbread men.
One and three quarters thumbs up - yeah I know it is 'problematic' yadda yadda yadda and I've knocked off a quarter thumbs off for that, but whatever, I still love it and I will watch it every Christmas.

Little Women (2019)

Have always had a soft spot for Amy, so I loved this take on Amy... except for her low voice! I wish she had put on a more sweet trilling voice for the younger years at least!
One and a half thumbs up - I really enjoyed it, but I felt that flashbacks detracted from really developing a lot of relationships (Jo with Laurie, her sisters individually). I want to get my hands on this and re-cut it to be chronological order and it would be beautiful!

The Irishman

This sounds obvious, but De Niro is a really good actor! Even when he doesn't have lines, his reactions are so nuanced.
One thumbs up - it was good, but it really did not need to be that long Scorsese. It took us a week and a half to get through it!

Knives Out

Thanks Josh for watching this with me. I know you could have gone with school for free, but you waited to watch with me.
One and a half thumbs up - I really liked it! It was like an Agatha Christie novel, but for today. Also "He's (Chris Evans) is so dreamy!"

Tuesday 10 December 2019

Aquaman

Not sure what was worse, the dialogue or Willem Dafoe's stupid top-knot hair.
One and a half thumbs down - stop trying to make Amber Heard (or Cara Delevingne), it's not going to happen.
