I have to agree with the Academy in it not receiving best actor or actress nominations - the story itself was powerful but the performances were only average.

Of course it starts raining as soon as the movie starts.
One thumbs up for the movie, one thumbs down for the rain, and one thumbs up for each of the delicious baos: peking duck, fried chicken and pork belly!

Chappie

Mostly I was impressed with how sympathetic they made the robot Chappie, until things got a bit silly with the whole consciousness and battery thing at the end.
Zero thumbs up (but no thumbs down), and at least now I know who Die Antwoord are.

It's a bit insane how everyone in the town goes along with it. Also, Mark Brendanawicz!

I would like to make it a goal to learn the dance by the end of the year, but I don't think that will happen.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

The film colour palette is much darker and washed out than the advertisements or book suggest.
Only one thumbs up, and beautiful articulate voice points to Ralph Fiennes, darling.

That woman sitting next to me was very standoff-ish when I politely asked if anyone was sitting in the seat next to hers; she also shook or nodded her head a lot during this.
Three quarters thumbs up - it was very insightful into the Snowden events.
