One thumbs up - hehe it's fun. And I always laugh when Romy pretends her shoe is filling up with blood and half limps away. Classic.

Rush Hour

I highly suspect mum pinched this DVD from Grandma. Hehe good choice. 

Two thumbs up - perfect afternoon movie with a practically perfect box of pizza Shapes. 

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend's Wedding; Gavin from Friends) played the cello in the orchestra for the score of this film. He is a part-time classical cellist. Now THAT is a great fun fact from IMdB! More of this and less stupid irrelevant facts (e.g. Agent Carter is a character from Marvel, in which Jeremy Renner also stars) please!

Three quarters thumbs up - it's alright, but it is no Fallout. 

Snowpiercer

Yeah (Reb's) Matt I agree, this was shite. How on earth did it get 94% on Rotten Tomatoes?!
One thumbs down - hot garbage in a frozen world. Really intriguing world and premise, but my god that was so disjointed and not coherent at all. I am sorry Bong Joon-Ho, but it is a thumbs down for me.

Mission Impossible: Fallout

Me: "Ooh okay. Download the phone. Oh that is clever. I was wondering how they would get the passcode again"
Reb: "Yeah... they are a bit more tech savvy than you"
EVERYONE IS MORE TECH SAVVY THAN ME. However I am more wily than them because if I had to transport a high value prisoner, I wouldn't use a super obvious armoured truck and police convoy. Seriously just pop them in the boot of a silver Corolla and be on your way.
One and a half thumbs up - "sexy fast paced action" except less on the sexy and more on the fast paced. AND I am totally blown by the stunts that they actually did: the skydive!, jumping between buildings!, rappelling down the Palais!, climbing the rope!, the cliff!. WOW!

A Cure For Wellness

Heh my pastel mint-green doona cover matches the colour theme for this movie.
One thumbs up - it is much more exciting and creepy than it reads on Wikipedia. I have wanted to watch this movie for a while now ever since seeing a lot of really cool artwork for it on alternative movie posters. But I was (rightfully) worried I would be scared so I read up the plot on Wikipedia. The movie is better, mostly because it is actually really beautiful. But also creepy, so beware.

To Kill A Mockingbird

Gregory Peck is to George Clooney what Robert Redford is to Brad Pitt. I personally vibe Pitt/Redford way, but really, they are all fine.
Two thumbs up - it is such an amazing adaptation of the book. Though it obviously has to omit some things (like reading to the mean old morphine lady, which for some reason I really liked that part) it really captures everything. And I totally forgot about Dill! And the tree hole treasures!

Ponyo

Whoa you're a man?! But you have such chaotic feminine energy.
One and a half thumbs up - it is basically a mermaid story but if mermaids were less sexy and more about wearing snuggies and being adorable.

Beastie Boys Story

Was not a fan of the format. The whole stage act felt contrived, the intermittent applause was cheesy, and what was the point of having "Spike Jones directed" for that? It didn't do anything better than a regular documentary would have achieved and you can still keep the amazing footage and stories (I especially loved being Madonn's support act, and the Marilyn Handoff house and wardrobe).
'Stupid fresh' but zero thumbs up - also personal thumbs down to Reb and myself for thinking MCA's uncle Nathaniel Hornblower was a real guy. Reb got a pity pat from Matt for that. #rhymez

Rocketman

So... my first experiences of a lot of Elton John songs that were NOT from the Lion King are often from a lot of hilariously "bad" movies (e.g. 'Bennie and the Jets' from 27 Dresses, 'Saturday Night's Alright' from that children's Gnome animation with Emily Blunt). But also good stuff like 'My Song' from Moulin Rouge, and 'Tiny Dancer' from Dave Grohl.
One and a quarter thumbs up - I quite enjoyed it actually. I am surprised that instead of diving into Elton's personal collection of glasses, they went with a lot of modern and current sunglasses (e.g. spotted the Chloe Carlina aviator, Gucci, Fendi, Oliver Goldsmith for being British and of that time; discovered a new brand Cazal).

Long Shot

This movie does not give a fuck how thinly veiled the references are hehe.
Half a thumbs up - they have good chemistry, it is mostly plausible (except for a certain speech at the end), but I think I had higher expectations and it didn't reach those.

Sully

Wait, your wife calls you Sully? That is like a partner calling me "Chimmy". Yeah, nah.
One thumbs up - it is all so insane. And how were there no media images of the passengers standing on the wings? *Voiceover: There were. She clearly did not remember these* 

A Dangerous Method

So I googled Carl Jung afterwards to see if he was as attractive as Michael Fassbender managed (despite the little mustache and little round glasses)... he was not. And the first images Google throws up are of a very old man. So... no.
One thumbs down - I was anticipating Keira Knightley-Michael Fassbender-spanking-sexual-hotness. It was NOT HOT. It was just psychoanalytical talk without much else going on.

Second Act

I am curious who of Nicole's shared Amazon recipients watched this before I did? Hehe.
Three quarters thumbs up - it is cheesy, it is predictable, it is surprisingly sweet, it has J Lo... all the makings for a perfect afternoon movie.

Monster

As difficult and disturbing as her life was, the saddest part for me was that she "hooked" herself for $30. Thirty dollars. That's it.
One thumbs up, all for Charlize because what a performance.
On a side note, I watched this movie in 30 - 45 minute portions over a couple of nights. I have done this for some other movies before too. Turns out this is a much more controversial move than I had ever thought! People I told this to range from agreeing (e.g. Lord of the Rings in portions became their mini TV series) to SHOOK and disappointed haha. So there you go, I do this to movies sometimes. I take the degustation dinner and eat it over the course of a week. Sometimes.

Okja

I don't know why but I was quite bothered by Mija's bowl haircut. Like why this stylistic choice? Is this still a typical hairstyle? Are you trying to ironically or lovingly embrace the Asian stereotype? But then isn't this just reinforcing the stereotype? But maybe Bong Joon doesn't have the same complex I do to this because he didn't have to sport a bowl haircut as a child.
Zero thumbs up - interesting world set-up, but it felt like it was neither here nor there, like one foot in the Korean world and another in the American world but not enough depth in either.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

I had to pause and watch a video on making gnocchi (tip: add an egg next time), to calm myself down and to just give my eyes and soul a break.
One and a quarter thumbs up - that was NOT funny. The Lobster and The Favourite are much more my flavour of Yorgos Lanthimos dark humour. This was just absurdist but not at all funny. Get rid of any expectations of where you think it will go, because it will just veer off course.

Ratatouille

We talked about if we had a favourite food country. We couldn't nominate our clear winners, but Reb gave special mention to Sri Lanka for good surprise and variety. However we easily talked about our life-changing or memorable meals. Reb had a pistachio/ricotta gelato from Italy. One of mine was when we had Japanese breakfast in Hawaii. Fish for breakfast?! This is AMAZING.
Two thumbs up - for so long I have always said Finding Nemo is my favourite Pixar movie. But as I get older, I feel my tastes have matured and now Ratatouille might be the unofficial favourite.

Tigertail

Chinese New Year house party?? We had a lot of questions:
1. Is this a thing? Is this an American thing? It is so strange. Friends... at CNY?? Whaaat
2. This is apparently the first time you've hosted this without Eric, but... you've only been with him for eight months?
Three quarters thumbs up - it had a lot of potential but didn't really go into any relationship in further depth. It was beautifully shot though. I was vibing a mix of Wes Anderson/Tarantino which is a weird combination but I might have just been confusing the Wes Anderson aesthetics with retro Tarantino music.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

An unmemorable second in the movie made memorable now haha.
